What Is the 8-Hour Driver Improvement Program? How Is It Different from the 4-Hour Tennessee Driver Education Course (Traffic School)?

Tennessee has two separate courses. The 4-hour Driver Education Course is what Driving Logic offers — it is used for ticket dismissal, point reduction for a speeding conviction, or voluntarily for an insurance discount. The 8-hour Driver Improvement Program is a different course required by the Tennessee DSHS for drivers whose license is at risk of suspension due to point accumulation. These are not interchangeable.

The 4-Hour Driver Education Course

The 4-hour course is governed by T.C.A. § 55-10-301. It is available to drivers who:

  • Have received court permission to dismiss a minor traffic violation

  • Have received a DSHS eligibility letter to remove points for a speeding conviction

  • Want to take the course voluntarily for an insurance discount

Driving Logic offers the 4-hour Tennessee Driver Education Course at drivinglogic.com.

The 8-Hour Driver Improvement Program

The 8-hour course is administered differently and is not offered by Driving Logic. It is required by the Tennessee DSHS when a driver has accumulated enough points on their record to trigger a proposed license suspension — typically 12 or more points within a 12-month period. Drivers required to attend this course receive a notice from the DSHS directly.

The 8-hour course cannot be used for ticket dismissal or voluntary insurance discounts. It is a mandatory remedial program, not an elective one.

How to Know Which One You Need

If you received a traffic citation and your court is offering you the option to attend traffic school to dismiss the ticket — you need the 4-hour course.

If you received a letter from the Tennessee DSHS notifying you of a speeding conviction and offering you the option to reduce points — you need the 4-hour course.

If you received a notice from the Tennessee DSHS about a proposed license suspension due to point accumulation, and the notice directs you to complete a Driver Improvement Program — you need the 8-hour program. Driving Logic does not offer this course.

If you are unsure which course applies, contact your court or the Tennessee DSHS before enrolling.

Frequently Asked Questions

My court ordered me to take a driver improvement course. Which one do I need? Contact your court and ask specifically whether they are requiring the 4-hour Driver Education Course under T.C.A. § 55-10-301 or an 8-hour Driver Improvement Program. The answer determines which course to enroll in.

I received a letter from the DSHS about my driving record. Which course do I need? If the letter says you are eligible to reduce points for a speeding conviction by taking a 4-hour course — that is the Driving Logic course. If the letter says you are required to attend an 8-hour Driver Improvement Program due to point accumulation — Driving Logic does not offer that course.
