What Happens to My Driving Record Points Over Time in Missouri?

Missouri reduces the points on your driving record over time as long as you do not accumulate new violations. After three consecutive years without new points, your point total is reduced to zero.

How Point Reduction Works

Missouri's point reduction schedule applies to all drivers, with or without completing a DIP course.

Year

What Happens

After 1 year without new points

Your total remaining points are reduced by one-third

After 2 years without new points

Your remaining points are reduced by one-half

After 3 years without new points

Your points are reduced to zero

Points are reduced from your total — not per violation. The reduction applies to whatever balance remains at the end of each clean year.

How the DIP Fits In

When you complete the Missouri Driver Improvement Program, points are not assessed for the qualifying conviction in the first place — your point total does not increase. This gives the natural reduction schedule a better starting point and helps you stay below the suspension thresholds.

Suspension Thresholds

The Missouri DOR monitors your point total and acts when thresholds are reached:

  • 4 points in 12 months → Advisory letter from the DOR

  • 8 or more points in 18 months → License suspension (30 days for first suspension, 60 days for second, 90 days for third)

  • 12 or more points in 12 months → License revoked for one year

  • 18 or more points in 24 months → License revoked for one year

  • 24 or more points in 36 months → License revoked for one year

After a point suspension or revocation is lifted, your total is reduced to 4 points.

Does the Conviction Come Off My Record?

No. Point totals can be reduced to zero, but the conviction itself remains on your Missouri driving record permanently. Traffic violations stay on record for at least three years, and violations that led to a suspension or revocation remain for five years.

The DIP prevents points — it does not remove the conviction.

Frequently Asked Questions

If the DIP keeps points off my record, do I still benefit from the reduction schedule? Yes. If the DIP prevents a two or three-point violation from being assessed, your total stays lower. A lower total means you stay further from suspension thresholds, and the annual reduction schedule brings your balance down faster.

My points were reduced to zero. Does that clear my driving record? No. Points being reduced to zero means the DOR no longer counts those points toward suspension thresholds. But the underlying convictions remain listed on your driving record.

Where can I check my current point total? You can request a copy of your Missouri driving record at dor.mo.gov. Your current point balance is shown on the record.
