The benefit you receive depends on why you are taking the course. When you enroll, you select one of four reasons — and that choice determines what happens after you complete it.

If you take the course voluntarily, you earn 5 safe driving points on your Virginia driving record. Safe driving points can offset demerit points and help protect your license. You can do this once every 24 months.

If a Virginia court or the DMV has ordered you to complete the course, finishing it satisfies that requirement. For DMV-ordered students, your driving privilege is restored once your completion is processed. For court-ordered students, your certificate is proof of compliance that you submit to the court.

If you take the course for insurance purposes, you receive a certificate you can submit to your insurance company to qualify for a premium discount. Check with your insurer before enrolling to confirm your eligibility.

All students complete 25 lessons covering Virginia traffic law, defensive driving techniques, hazard awareness, and road safety topics required by the Virginia DMV. This applies regardless of your reason for taking the course.

Can I get safe driving points and an insurance discount at the same time? No. Virginia law does not allow both from the same completion. You choose one purpose at registration.
