What Is the DPS Exam in the Texas Adult Driver Education Course (ADE)

The course includes the required comprehensive Texas Highway Sign and Traffic Law Examination. Each attempt contains 30 multiple-choice questions: 15 Highway Signs and 15 Traffic Laws, randomly selected from separate larger categorized banks. A score of 70% or higher (21 of 30 correct) is required to pass. Successful completion of the required examination through the approved ADE course satisfies the applicable written-knowledge examination requirement. Present your completion certificate when applying at DPS.

Who Sets the Exam Parameters

The final draws questions randomly from separate course banks of 45 Highway Signs questions and 45 Traffic Laws questions. Each attempt has the following structure:

  • 30 multiple-choice questions: 15 Highway Signs + 15 Traffic Laws

  • Passing score: 70% — at least 21 of 30 correct

  • Not timed — take as long as you need

Retakes

You have a maximum of three final exam attempts. After the first or second failed attempt, review the course material and retake the final using different questions. A third failed final means you fail the course.

What the Exam Covers

The exam tests your knowledge of Texas traffic laws, road signs, traffic signals, pavement markings, and safe driving practices. All content is drawn from the Texas Driver Handbook, which is also the basis for all course content.

Where It Appears in the Course

The DPS exam is the final assessment in the course. It unlocks only after you have completed all 7 prior lessons and passed all lesson quizzes. Once you pass the exam, your ADEE-1317 certificate is generated and emailed to you within 5 minutes.

Why This Matters

Because the DPS exam is built into the course, your ADEE-1317 certificate serves as proof you passed the official written knowledge test. When you visit the DPS driver license office, you present your certificate and skip the written test entirely. You still need to pass the vision test and road test at the DPS.
