Who Needs to Take the Course

Required by a court: Some courts order drivers to complete the Florida Basic Driver Improvement course as part of a traffic or legal proceeding. Lesson 2 — Collision Dynamics: The effect of speed on force of impact, the concept of first, second, and third collisions, and how vehicle design features such as crumple zones and airbags absorb collision energy. Lesson 3 — Collision Prevention Techniques: Scanning and distance guidelines, safe following distance, stopping distance in relation to speed, environmental hazards, vehicle emergencies, road sharing, passing, right of way, speed adjustment for school and construction zones, railroad crossings, and motorcycle licensing. Lesson 4 — Vulnerable Road Users: The definition of vulnerable road users under Florida law, types of vulnerable road users, Florida laws protecting them, driver responsibilities, and current infrastructure trends for vulnerable road user safety. Lesson 5 — DUI Prevention: The effects of alcohol and drugs on driving ability, the relationship between alcohol consumption and blood alcohol concentration (BAC), Florida's DUI laws and legal consequences, and strategies for avoiding impaired driving. Lesson 6 — Safety Equipment: Florida's seat belt laws, headrest function, Florida's child restraint laws, airbag safety, and the importance of vehicle safety maintenance. Lesson 7 — Psychological Factors: Managing stress, fatigue, and emotional distress while driving, and developing an appropriate attitude as a driver. Lesson 8 — Florida Traffic Laws: The Florida point system and license penalties, driving without a valid license, speed limits, traffic signs and signals, school bus laws, Florida's Move Over Law, drag racing and reckless driving laws, golf cart operation, and required vehicle safety equipment.
How Long the Course Takes
The course takes a minimum of 4 hours to complete. Timed sections ensure you cannot move through the material faster than the minimum required time. Most drivers complete the Florida Basic Driver Improvement course in 4 to 6 hours. You do not need to finish in one sitting and there is no limit on the number of sessions or logins.
If a court required you to take the course, finish it by the deadline given by your court. If you elected the course in connection with a qualifying citation, allow enough time to complete the course and for the FLHSMV to process your completion before any court deadlines. If you enrolled voluntarily, there is no deadline.
Your Completion Certificate
Your certificate is issued immediately after you pass the final exam. It is available in two places — in your account under My Certificates at drivinglogic.com, and emailed to you automatically as an attachment.
Your certificate is issued as a PDF. You can download and print it directly from your account at any time.
Reporting to the FLHSMV
Driving Logic reports your completion to the FLHSMV within 1 business day of passing the final exam. The FLHSMV typically processes course completions immediately upon submission. No action is required from you.
If a court required you to complete the course, Driving Logic reports to the FLHSMV only — not to courts. Any submission required by your court is your responsibility. Check your court paperwork for instructions.
Point Prevention
Completing the Florida Basic Driver Improvement course in connection with a qualifying citation prevents points for that citation from being added to your Florida driving record. The course does not remove points already on your record. You may elect the course once per 12-month period and up to 8 times in your lifetime.
Insurance Discount
Your Florida Basic Driver Improvement course certificate may qualify you for a discount on your auto insurance. Eligibility depends on your insurance provider and policy.
