Who Is Eligible to Take the New Jersey Defensive Driving Course (DDC)

Most licensed drivers can enroll in the New Jersey Defensive Driving Course (DDC). Eligibility for specific benefits — such as point reduction or insurance discounts — depends on your license status, driving history, and insurance provider.

Point Reduction Eligibility

To receive the MVC point reduction benefit after completing the course, you must:

  • Hold a valid New Jersey driver's license

  • Not have received point reduction from a defensive driving course within the past 5 years

  • Successfully complete a state-approved course

Point reduction is applied by the MVC after Driving Logic reports your completion. It does not remove violations or convictions.

Insurance Discount Eligibility

Whether the course qualifies you for an insurance discount depends entirely on your insurance provider. Eligibility may depend on your age, policy type, and driving history. Contact your insurer to confirm before enrolling.

Court-Ordered or Court-Recommended Participation

Some courts recommend or allow participation in a defensive driving program as part of a case. If a court has directed you to take the course, confirm that an approved online course satisfies the requirement before enrolling. Note any completion deadline the court has given you.

Out-of-State Drivers

If you hold a valid New Jersey driver's license but live in another state, you can still take the course and receive the MVC point reduction benefit. If you hold a license issued by another state, you can still enroll for insurance purposes, but New Jersey point reduction will not apply.

CDL Holders

If you hold a commercial driver's license, verify eligibility before enrolling. Defensive driving courses typically do not apply point reduction to CDL violations. Contact the MVC or your insurer to confirm.
