What Happens If You Fail the New Jersey Defensive Driving Course (DDC) Final Exam

If you do not pass the final exam, you can retake it. You have up to 3 total attempts. After each failed attempt, you can review the correct answers before trying again. There is no waiting period and no additional charge to retake the exam.

How Many Attempts You Have

You have up to 3 total attempts on the final exam — one initial attempt plus two additional attempts if needed. If you do not pass after 3 attempts, you will not receive a certificate and will not qualify for point reduction or insurance benefits. You may need to re-enroll.

After a Failed Attempt

After a failed attempt, you will see the correct answers and explanations for each question. Review the questions you missed and the course material covering those topics before retaking the exam. You can also go back through the course modules at any time to study.

Preparing to Retake

The final exam is not open book — you must answer from memory. Before retaking, review your weak areas in the course material. The exam draws 40 questions randomly from a 120-question bank, so the questions you see on each attempt will be different.

After You Pass

Once you achieve a score of 80% or higher, your completion certificate is emailed to you automatically. Driving Logic then submits your completion record to the New Jersey MVC within 10 business days.
