Are There Quizzes in the Texas Adult Driver Education Course (ADE)

Yes. There is a short quiz at the end of each lesson and a final assessment — the official Texas DPS Highway Sign and Traffic Law Examination — at the end of the course.

Lesson Quizzes

Each lesson ends with a short multiple-choice quiz covering the content from that lesson. You must pass the quiz to advance to the next lesson. If you do not pass on your first attempt, you can retake it immediately. There is no limit on retakes and no penalty for retaking.

The DPS Exam

The final assessment is the official 30-question Texas DPS Highway Sign and Traffic Law Examination. This is not a provider-created quiz — it is the same written knowledge exam administered by the Texas Department of Public Safety. Passing it with 70% or higher (21 of 30 correct) completes the course and earns you the ADE-1317 certificate.

Because the DPS exam is built into the course, you do not need to take the written knowledge test again at the DPS office when you apply for your license. Your ADE-1317 certificate serves as proof you already passed it.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many questions are on the lesson quizzes? See the lesson quiz article for details on question counts per lesson.

Is the DPS exam hard? The exam is based on the Texas Driver Handbook, which is also the basis for all course content. Students who engage with the course material are well-prepared for the exam. Most students pass on their first attempt.

What happens if I fail the DPS exam? You can retake it. See the DPS exam failure article for full details on retake procedures and what to review.

Do the lesson quiz questions appear on the DPS exam? The lesson quizzes and the DPS exam both draw from Texas traffic law and road sign content, but they are separate assessments. The DPS exam covers content from across the full course.

Will I know my DPS exam score immediately? Yes. Your result is shown immediately after you submit the exam. If you pass, your ADE-1317 certificate is generated. If you do not pass, you will see your score and can review before retaking.
