Who Is Eligible to Take the Texas Adult Driver Education Course (ADE)

Any adult 18 or older can enroll in the Texas Adult Driver Education Course. Whether it is required or optional depends on your age and licensing situation.

Adults Ages 18–24 — Required

If you are between 18 and 24 years old and have never held a Texas driver's license, Texas law requires you to complete a TDLR-approved Adult Driver Education Course before applying for your license. There are no additional eligibility restrictions — any adult in this age range who needs a first Texas license is eligible to enroll.

Adults Ages 25 and Older — Optional

Adults 25 and older are not required by Texas law to complete driver education. However, many choose to take the course because completing it allows them to take the official DPS written exam online as part of the course, rather than in person at a DPS office. This can save significant time and hassle.

Out-of-State License Holders

If you already hold a valid, unexpired driver's license from another U.S. state and are moving to Texas, you may be exempt from the driver education requirement when applying for a Texas license. Texas generally waives the written knowledge test and driver education requirement for holders of valid out-of-state licenses. Contact your local DPS office to confirm based on your specific situation.

No Court Permission or Prior Steps Required

Unlike the Texas Driving Safety Course, the Adult Driver Education Course does not require any court permission or prior steps before enrolling. Simply register at drivinglogic.com, pay, and begin the course.

Frequently Asked Questions

I am 22 and have a driver's license from another state — do I still need this course? If your out-of-state license is valid and unexpired, you are likely exempt from the Texas driver education requirement. Texas generally accepts valid out-of-state licenses. Contact your local DPS office to confirm before enrolling.

I am 19 and have never driven before — can I take this course? Yes. The course is designed for adults with no prior license. There are no prerequisites other than being 18 or older.

I am 30 and taking a driving test for the first time — do I need this course? You are not required to take it, but it is strongly recommended. Completing the course allows you to take the DPS written exam online from home rather than at the DPS office, and ensures you are prepared for the knowledge test.

I am 17 and will turn 18 soon — can I enroll now? The Adult Driver Education Course is for adults 18 and older. If you are 17, you would need to take a teen driver education course. Contact Driving Logic if you have questions about which course applies to your situation.

Is there any residency requirement to take this course? No. Any adult 18 or older who needs a Texas driver's license can enroll regardless of how long they have lived in Texas.
