What Is the Texas Parent Taught Driver Education Course

The Texas Teen Driver Education Course from Driving Logic is a TDLR-approved 24-hour online course for teens ages 14–17. It is delivered through the Parent-Taught Driver Education (PTDE) program — meaning a parent or qualified adult serves as the instructor while the teen completes the classroom portion online. Completing it is required for Texas teens under 18 to obtain a driver's license.

What the Course Does

The course satisfies the classroom instruction requirement for a Texas teen driver's license. It covers Texas traffic laws, road signs, signals, defensive driving, alcohol and drug awareness, human trafficking education, and more — everything tested on the DPS written knowledge exam.

The DPS written permit exam (30 questions, 70% passing) is integrated directly into the course at the end of Module 1. Teens who pass it receive a DE-964 Permit Qualification Certificate, which means they skip the written test at the DPS office when applying for their Learner's Permit.

What the Course Does Not Do

This course covers the classroom portion only. It does not include:

  • Behind-the-wheel training — the 44 hours of driving practice required by Texas law are the parent instructor's responsibility

  • The road test — taken at a DPS office or third-party provider

  • The ITTD program — a separate free 2-hour DPS video required before the road test

Who It Is For

Any Texas teen ages 14–17 who needs a driver's license. Teens can start the course at 14 but must be 15 to apply for a Learner's Permit at the DPS.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this the same as a traditional driving school? It covers the same TDLR-required classroom curriculum. The difference is delivery — traditional schools have licensed instructors; the PTDE program uses a parent or qualified adult as the instructor. Both result in the same DE-964 certificate accepted at all Texas DPS offices.

Does my teen need to take this course? Yes, if they are under 18 and applying for a first Texas driver's license. All teens must complete a TDLR-approved driver education course before getting a license.

What is the DE-964 certificate? The DE-964 is the official Texas Driver Education certificate. Two are issued: one after Module 1 for the Learner's Permit, and one after completing all 24 hours for the Provisional License.

Can teens 18 and older take this course? Teens who turn 18 before completing the course may need to switch to the Adult Driver Education course. Contact Driving Logic support for guidance if this situation applies.

Is this course accepted at all Texas DPS offices? Yes. Driving Logic's course is TDLR-approved and the DE-964 certificate is accepted at all Texas DPS driver license offices statewide.
