Texas Parent Taught Driver Education Course — Complete Guide

The Texas Teen Driver Education Course from Driving Logic is a TDLR-approved 24-hour online course for teens ages 14–17. It is delivered through the Parent-Taught Driver Education (PTDE) program, which means a parent, guardian, or designated adult serves as the instructor while the teen completes the classroom portion online. It is the same curriculum used to earn the DE-964 certificate required for a Texas driver's license.

The 9-Step Path to a Provisional License

Step 1 — Purchase the course ($59.95) Enroll at drivinglogic.com and gain immediate access.

Step 2 — Choose your parent instructor Confirm the parent or designated adult meets TDLR eligibility requirements. They must hold a valid Texas license with 3+ years of history, fewer than 6 points, no DWI in 7 years, and no suspension in 3 years.

Step 3 — Order the TDLR PTDE Packet ($20 — separate from course fee) The parent orders the PTDE Program Guide from TDLR at tdlr.texas.gov before the course begins. It is delivered instantly by email.

Step 4 — Complete Module 1 — first 6 hours The teen completes the first 6 hours of online instruction covering Texas traffic laws.

Step 5 — Pass the DPS permit exam and download the DE-964 Permit Certificate After Module 1, the teen takes the 30-question DPS written knowledge exam integrated into the course. Pass at 70%+ and the DE-964 6-Hour Permit Qualification Certificate is available immediately.

Step 6 — Visit the DPS to get the Learner's Permit Bring the DE-964 Permit Certificate and required documents to a Texas DPS driver license office. Teen must be at least 15.

Step 7 — Complete behind-the-wheel training — 44 hours Under the PTDE program, the parent instructor supervises 7 hours of observation, 7 hours of instruction, and 30 hours of practice (10 at night). This phase is not provided by Driving Logic.

Step 8 — Finish Modules 2–12 — remaining 18 hours — and download the DE-964 Completion Certificate Complete all 24 hours of the course and pass all 12 module quizzes. The DE-964 Full Completion Certificate is then available.

Step 9 — Complete ITTD, hold permit 6 months, turn 16, then pass the road test → Provisional License Complete the free 2-hour ITTD program from Texas DPS. Once the teen has held their permit for 6 months, turned 16, and completed all BTW hours, they take the road test at a DPS office or third-party provider.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the PTDE Packet and do I need it before starting? Yes. The parent must purchase the $20 PTDE Program Guide from TDLR before beginning. It registers the parent as the instructor and is required by DPS when the teen applies for their Learner's Permit and Provisional License.

Does this course include the DPS written permit exam? Yes. The 30-question DPS written knowledge exam is integrated into Module 1. Passing it means the teen skips the written test at the DPS office.

Does Driving Logic provide behind-the-wheel instruction? No. The 44 hours of BTW training are the parent instructor's responsibility under the PTDE program. Driving Logic provides the classroom curriculum only.

How long does the full process take? Most families complete the classroom portion in a few weeks. The BTW phase spreads over months. The 6-month permit holding period is mandatory. Most teens earn their provisional license 7–9 months after starting.

Does my teen need to be in school to take this course? Teens must provide a Verification of Enrollment and Attendance (VOE) form from their school when applying for the Learner's Permit at the DPS. Home-schooled teens use a home school affidavit.
