Two things need to happen before the teen begins: the parent orders the PTDE Packet from TDLR, and the family enrolls in the course at drivinglogic.com. Both can be done the same day.

Order the PTDE Packet from TDLR first. Go to tdlr.texas.gov, navigate to Parent-Taught Driver Education, and order the PTDE Program Guide ($20). It is delivered instantly by email. This step registers the parent as the driving instructor and is required at the DPS when the teen applies for their Learner's Permit.

Confirm instructor eligibility. Make sure the parent or designated adult meets the driving record requirements before ordering the packet. See the instructor eligibility article for the full list of requirements.

Once enrolled, the teen can begin Module 1 right away. The course opens sequentially — each module unlocks after completing the previous one. Progress saves automatically so the teen can log out and return at any time.

Can my teen start before the PTDE Packet arrives? The packet is delivered instantly by email, so there should be no wait. It is best practice to have the packet confirmed in hand before starting the course.

What name should I use when registering? The teen's full legal name exactly as it appears on their government-issued ID or birth certificate. This name appears on both DE-964 certificates and must match DPS records.

Do I register the parent or the teen on the course? Register the teen — they are the student completing the course. The parent's role is the driving instructor in the BTW phase, not a participant in the online classroom.

Can a 14-year-old start right away? Yes. Teens can start and complete Module 1 at 14. However, they cannot apply for a Learner's Permit at the DPS until they turn 15.

Do I need to notify TDLR that we are starting the course? No. Ordering the PTDE Packet from TDLR is the notification. There is no separate registration step required before beginning the online classroom course.
