Who Provides BTW Training

Under the PTDE program, the designated parent instructor supervises the 7 hours of observation and 7 hours of instruction. The remaining 30 hours of practice driving can be supervised by any licensed adult who is at least 21 with 1+ year of license history.

Families who are not comfortable providing all 44 hours themselves can hire a local driving school to provide the 7 hours of observation and 7 hours of instruction, while the parent handles the 30 practice hours.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I hire a driving school for just the 7 hours of instruction while using Driving Logic for the classroom? Yes. Many families use Driving Logic for the classroom course and hire a local driving school for the 7 hours of observation and 7 hours of instruction. The parent still handles the 30 hours of practice. This hybrid approach is common.

Is there a driving log included in the Driving Logic course? The driving log is included in the PTDE Program Guide from TDLR, not in the Driving Logic course. Some families also use third-party driving log apps to track and print hours.

How do we find a local driving school for the BTW hours? Search for TDLR-licensed driving schools in your area on the TDLR website at tdlr.texas.gov. Confirm they accept students from PTDE programs before booking.

What if no parent in our household can serve as the instructor? The parent or legal guardian can designate another qualifying adult to be the instructor. If no one qualifies, enrolling in an instructor-led course at a traditional driving school where a licensed instructor handles the BTW phase is an alternative.
