Is There a Minimum Number of Days to Complete the Texas Teen Driver Education Course

Yes. Texas requires the 24-hour classroom course to be completed over a minimum of 5 days. No more than 6 hours of classroom instruction can be completed in a single day. These limits are enforced automatically by the course system.

Why the Minimum Exists

The 5-day minimum and 6-hour daily cap are designed to ensure teens absorb the material over time rather than clicking through an entire course in one sitting. This is a TDLR requirement, not a Driving Logic policy.

What This Means in Practice

A teen who studies at the maximum pace of 6 hours per day would finish the course in:

  • Day 1: Complete Module 1 (6 hours) → DPS permit exam → download Permit Certificate

  • Days 2–4: Complete Modules 2–9 (up to 6 hours/day)

  • Day 5: Complete Modules 10–12 → download Completion Certificate

Most families spread the course over several weeks, working through a module or two per session.

No Upper Time Limit

There is no maximum time allowed to complete the course. The teen can take as long as needed. The course does not expire.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can my teen do Module 1 in one day and then take a break before continuing? Yes. Module 1 is 6 hours — exactly the daily maximum. After completing Module 1 and the permit exam, the teen can apply for their Learner's Permit and then return to the course at any time to complete Modules 2–12.

What happens if the teen tries to do more than 6 hours in one day? The course system stops advancing after 6 hours of daily instruction. The remaining content unlocks the next day.

Does the 5-day minimum mean 5 consecutive days? No. The 5 days do not need to be consecutive. The teen could complete the course over 5 days spread across several weeks.

Do BTW hours count toward the 6-hour daily limit? BTW instruction hours and classroom hours have separate daily limits. Classroom is capped at 6 hours per day. BTW instruction is capped at 2 hours per day under PTDE rules. They are tracked separately.

My teen is taking a long time to finish — is that a problem? No. There is no deadline or expiration on the course enrollment. Take as much time as needed.
