How Often Can I Take the Indiana Driver Safety Program Course for a Point Credit?

You can earn the 4-point driving record credit from the Indiana Driver Safety Program course once every 3 years.

How the 3-Year Limit Works

The 3-year period is measured from the date your previous course completion was reported to the Indiana BMV. After 3 years have passed, you are eligible to take the course again and earn the credit once more.

Completing the course before the 3-year period has expired will not result in a second credit. However, each time you complete the course, the 3-year clock resets from that new completion date.

For example, if you completed the course in January 2024 and complete it again in January 2026 — before 3 years have passed — no additional credit is applied, but your next eligibility date moves to January 2029.

If You Are Required to Take the Course Again

If the Indiana BMV requires you to take the course again, you will earn the 4-point credit upon completion just as you did the first time, provided 3 years have passed since your last qualifying completion. The 3-year clock resets with each qualifying completion.

If You Take the Course Voluntarily

You may take the course voluntarily as many times as you choose, but the 4-point credit can only be applied once every 3 years. There is no restriction on enrollment — only on how often the credit can be earned.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens if I take the course twice in the same year? You will only receive one 4-point credit. The second completion will not result in an additional credit, but it will reset the 3-year clock from the date of the new completion.

Is there a limit to how many times I can take the course over my lifetime? No. You can take the course and earn the credit as many times as needed, as long as 3 years have passed since your last qualifying completion.

Does the 3-year limit reset if I move to a different Indiana county? Yes. The credit is tied to your Indiana driving record, not your county or address. The 3-year limit applies statewide regardless of where you live in Indiana.
