Who Is Eligible to Take the Florida Basic Driver Improvement Course?

Any licensed Florida driver statewide can take the Florida Basic Driver Improvement course — whether you elected it for a citation, were ordered by a court, or are taking it voluntarily.

Updated today

Any licensed Florida driver statewide is eligible to take the Florida Basic Driver Improvement (BDI) course. There are three reasons drivers take the course, each with its own eligibility rules.

Drivers Who Elect the Course for a Traffic Citation

If you received a qualifying traffic citation, you may elect to take the Florida Basic Driver Improvement course to prevent points from being added to your driving record. This is the most common reason drivers enroll.

To be eligible to elect the course:

  • Your citation must be for a qualifying non-criminal moving violation

  • You must not hold a Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

  • You must not have elected the course in the preceding 12 months

  • You must not have used all 8 of your lifetime elections

  • You must not have been cited for speeding 30 or more miles per hour over the posted speed limit

You may elect the course once per 12-month period and up to 8 times in your lifetime under Florida Statute 318.14(9), effective July 1, 2024.

Drivers Who Are Court-Ordered to Take the Course

A judge or magistrate may order you to complete the Florida Basic Driver Improvement course as part of a court proceeding. If you have been court-ordered, the 12-month and lifetime election limits do not apply. Confirm with your court that the Driving Logic course satisfies your specific order before enrolling.

Drivers Who Take the Course Voluntarily

Any licensed Florida driver may take the course voluntarily at any time — no citation or court order required. Voluntary enrollment does not prevent points from being added to your record, but your certificate may qualify you for an insurance discount depending on your provider.

Who Is Not Eligible for the Election Track

  • CDL holders — cannot elect BDI regardless of which vehicle they were driving

  • Drivers who already elected BDI within the past 12 months

  • Drivers who have used all 8 lifetime elections

  • Drivers cited for speeding 30+ mph over the posted speed limit

If you are not eligible to elect, you may still be able to take the course if a court orders it. Contact your court for options.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if my citation qualifies for a BDI election? Check the back of your citation or contact the clerk of court in the county where the citation was issued. They can confirm whether your violation is eligible.

Can I take the course if I have an out-of-state license? Let us know and we can help before you enroll. Eligibility for point prevention depends on your specific situation and the requirements of the court or agency involved.

Does voluntary enrollment use one of my 8 lifetime elections? No. Only a formal election made in connection with a qualifying citation counts against your lifetime limit.

Can a CDL holder ever take the BDI course? A CDL holder cannot elect the course for point prevention, but a judge may order a CDL holder to complete BDI as part of a court proceeding. If that applies to you, confirm with your court before enrolling.
