Complete guide to the Florida Basic Driver Improvement course — cost, how it works, exam, certificate, FLHSMV reporting, point prevention, and fine reduction.

Updated today

The Florida Basic Driver Improvement (BDI) course is a state-approved online course for Florida drivers. Completing it in connection with a qualifying citation prevents points from being added to your driving record, reduces your traffic fine by 18%, and protects your insurance rates. This guide covers everything from enrollment through completion.

What the Course Is

The Florida BDI course is a 4-hour, 100% online, self-paced course covering traffic collision prevention, Florida traffic laws, DUI prevention, vehicle safety, and safe driving behaviors. It is organized into 8 lessons with 46 topics and is approved by the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV).

The course includes a final exam: 40 questions, 80% passing score, open book, no time limit, unlimited retakes at no charge.

Who Takes the Course

Election track: You received a qualifying non-criminal moving violation and want to prevent points. You must elect the course within 30 days of your citation date by notifying the clerk of court in the county where the citation was issued. Court-ordered track: A judge ordered you to complete the BDI course. Confirm the course and deadline with your court before enrolling. Voluntary track: Any licensed Florida driver can take the course at any time for an insurance discount or self-improvement. No citation or court order required.

Who Is Not Eligible for the Election Track

  • CDL holders

  • Drivers who already elected BDI in the preceding 12 months

  • Drivers who have used all 8 lifetime elections

  • Drivers cited for speeding 30+ mph over the posted speed limit

Before You Enroll — Election Track

If you are electing the course for a citation, this step must happen first:

  1. Contact the clerk of court in the county where the citation was issued

  2. Notify them of your election within 30 days of the citation date (Florida Statute 318.14(4))

  3. Pay the election fee to the clerk

  4. Then enroll in the Driving Logic course

Enrolling in the course does not notify the court. The election step is your responsibility.

Benefits of Completing the Course (Election Track)

Point prevention: No points are added to your Florida driving record for the qualifying citation. The violation is recorded as adjudication withheld. 18% fine reduction: Your civil fine is reduced by 18% under Florida Statute 318.14(9), applied by the clerk of court at the time of election. Insurance rate protection: Florida Statute §626.9541 prohibits your insurer from raising your rates, canceling, or non-renewing your policy due to the infraction when adjudication is withheld. Safe driver status retention: If you had safe driver status before the citation, you retain it after completing BDI through election.

Insurance Discount (Voluntary Track)

If you take the course voluntarily, your certificate may qualify you for an auto insurance discount. Florida law allows insurers to offer up to 10%. Eligibility and amount vary by provider — contact your insurer before enrolling. Submit the certificate directly to your insurer; Driving Logic does not submit to insurance companies.
