Updated today

No. Virginia law does not allow you to receive both safe driving points and an insurance premium discount from the same course completion. You must choose one or the other when you register.

Why Not Both?

Virginia Code § 46.2-498 specifies that drivers who voluntarily complete a driver improvement clinic are eligible to receive either safe driving points or a reduction in insurance premium charges — not both from the same completion. This rule is not set by Driving Logic. It applies to all Virginia Driver Improvement Course providers statewide.

Which Should You Choose?

  • If you have accumulated demerit points and want to protect your driving record, choose Voluntary to earn 5 safe driving points

  • If you have a clean record and primarily want to lower your insurance cost, choose Insurance and confirm eligibility with your insurer first

  • If you are not sure, check your current point balance at dmvNow.com and contact your insurance agent before enrolling

Other Mutual Exclusions to Know

  • Court-ordered students are not eligible for an insurance discount from the same court-required completion

  • If you take the course for court, you cannot also claim an insurance discount for that completion

Frequently Asked Questions

What if I choose the wrong reason at registration? Contact us at [email protected] as soon as possible before completing the course. Once a certificate has been issued, the reason for attendance cannot be changed.

Can I take the course twice — once for points and once for insurance? You can take the course again after 24 months for a different voluntary purpose. You cannot take it twice within the same 24-month period for both benefits.

What if I want the insurance discount but also have demerit points? You will need to choose one benefit for this completion. If offsetting demerit points is more urgent, select Voluntary. You can take the course again after 24 months if you want to pursue the insurance discount later.
