The Texas Adult Driver Education Course covers all topics required by the TDLR Program of Organized Instruction (POI) across 7 lessons. Content is Texas-specific and aligned with the Texas Driver Handbook, which is the basis for the DPS written knowledge exam.

Lesson 1 — Course Introduction and Driving as a Privilege

Establishes the legal and personal responsibilities that come with a Texas driver's license — driving as a privilege with risk, obligations, and potential consequences.

Lesson 2 — Your License to Drive

Covers the Texas driver license application process, license types and restrictions, endorsements, suspensions and revocations, vehicle registration and inspection, and the Texas Safety Responsibility Act.

Lesson 3 — Right-of-Way

Covers right-of-way laws at all intersection types including traditional and non-traditional intersections, railroad crossings, turning rules, yielding to emergency vehicles under Transportation Code §545.157, the Move Over and Slow Down Law, school bus laws, and pedestrian protections.

Lesson 4 — Traffic Control Devices

Covers Texas regulatory signs, warning signs, guide signs, traffic signals, flashing signal procedures, and pavement markings — including colors, shapes, and appropriate driver responses.

Lesson 5 — Controlling Traffic Flow

Covers passing laws, turning requirements, lane changes, avoiding blind spot driving, safe following intervals, speed limits, stopping and parking rules, freeway entry and exit, vehicle lighting requirements, highway hypnosis, vehicle emergency procedures (skids, brake failure, blowouts), and adverse weather driving.

Lesson 6 — Alcohol and Other Drugs

Covers how alcohol and drugs impair driving ability, blood alcohol concentration, Texas DWI law (including zero tolerance for drivers under 21), implied consent, Administrative License Revocation (ALR), open container law, and prevention.

Lesson 7 — Cooperating with Other Roadway Users

Covers pedestrian, cyclist, motorcycle, truck, and light rail safety; cargo and towing responsibilities; occupant restraints and open truck beds; the Good Samaritan Law; the Community Safety Education Act (Senate Bill 30) traffic stop procedures; aggressive driving; carbon monoxide safety; and safe operation near oversize and overweight vehicles.

Lesson 7 also includes: Managing Risk and Human Trafficking Awareness

Covers collision factors, distractions, wireless device laws, street racing laws (Transportation Code §545.420), safety belts and child passenger safety, night driving, the Texas Driving with Disabilities Program, and human trafficking recognition and reporting — a Texas-required topic covering how to identify potential victims and report trafficking.

Final Assessment — Texas DPS Exam

The course concludes with the official 30-question Texas DPS Highway Sign and Traffic Law Examination. Passing with 70% or higher (21 of 30 correct) completes the course. You have 3 attempts.
