The Texas Parent Taught Driver Education Course covers all content required by the TDLR Program of Organized Instruction for teen driver education. Content is Texas-specific and aligned with the Texas Driver Handbook.

The course is organized into 12 modules:

Module 1 — Traffic Laws Texas licensing requirements, right-of-way laws, traffic control devices, speed limits, passing and turning rules, alcohol and zero-tolerance laws, and road sharing with pedestrians, cyclists, motorcycles, and trucks. Module 1 concludes with the DPS written permit exam.

Module 2 — Driver Preparation Pre-drive and post-drive inspection, occupant protection, seat belts, child safety seats, airbags, dashboard warning lights, vehicle controls, steering, acceleration, and braking.

Module 3 — Vehicle Movements Visual and mental attention while driving, driver communication using signals and lights, reference points for vehicle positioning, vehicle balance, cornering dynamics, parking techniques, and backing maneuvers.

Module 4 — Driver Readiness Legal and responsible driving practices, following distance, night driving, driving with passengers, fatigue and drowsiness, aggressive driving, the Community Safety Education Act (SB 30) traffic stop procedures, and the Texas Driving with Disabilities Program.

Module 5 — Risk Reduction and Space Management Driver, vehicle, road, and traffic risk factors, the SEE System (Search, Evaluate, Execute), following distance, side and intersection space management, freeway space management, and adverse condition adjustments.

Module 6 — Environmental Factors Urban, suburban, rural, and freeway driving environments, nighttime driving, wet roads and Texas flooding, fog and smoke, construction and work zones including Texas SB 1366 requirements.

Module 7 — Distractions Visual, manual, and cognitive distraction types, Texas wireless device laws, texting and driving, cell phone conversations, navigation systems, passengers, GDL passenger restrictions, and building a distraction-free habit.

Module 8 — Alcohol and Other Drugs Alcohol crash statistics, how alcohol is absorbed and processed, physiological and psychological impairment effects, blood alcohol concentration, prescription and over-the-counter drug effects, marijuana and stimulants, combined substance effects, zero-tolerance for teens, implied consent, and long-term DWI consequences.

Module 9 — Adverse Conditions Rain, hydroplaning, Texas flash flooding, fog, high winds and dust storms, ice and winter conditions, traction loss, skid correction, collision avoidance, tire blowouts, and mechanical emergencies.

Module 10 — Vehicle Requirements Engine warning lights, steering and brake system inspection, tire condition and pressure, lighting requirements, preventive maintenance, battery and electrical systems, seasonal preparation, and pre-trip inspection.

Module 11 — Consumer Responsibilities Vehicle ownership decisions, auto insurance requirements, SR-22, environmental responsibility, Texas litter laws, anatomical gift registration, recreational water safety and boating laws, and human trafficking recognition and reporting.

Module 12 — Personal Responsibilities Texas Graduated Driver License (GDL) system, learner permit and provisional license requirements, driving record and points, crash reporting, financial consequences, and a comprehensive course assessment.

Does the course cover human trafficking? Yes. Human trafficking awareness is a Texas-required topic. Module 11 covers how to identify activities associated with trafficking, recognize potential victims, and report trafficking to authorities.

Does the course cover the Community Safety Education Act? Yes. Module 4 covers traffic stop procedures under Senate Bill 30 — a Texas-specific legislative requirement for all driver education courses.

Will my teen learn about the Texas GDL restrictions? Yes. Module 12 covers the full Texas Graduated Driver License system including learner permit restrictions, provisional license nighttime and passenger restrictions, and the path to a full license.

Is the course aligned with the Texas Driver Handbook? Yes. Course content is built around the Texas Driver Handbook, which is also the basis for the DPS written knowledge exam included in Module 1.

Does the course include road sign instruction? Yes. Traffic control devices — regulatory signs, warning signs, guide signs, signals, and pavement markings — are covered in Module 1 and are heavily represented on the DPS permit exam.
