What Does the Texas Driving Safety Course (DSC) Cover

The Texas Driving Safety Course covers a broad range of traffic safety topics required by TDLR. All content is Texas-specific and based on current Texas laws, Texas Department of Transportation data, and the TDLR Course of Organized Instruction.

Course Topics

The course is organized into 5 lessons covering the following required content areas:

Driver Responsibility and the Texas Traffic Safety Problem The course opens with the scope of crashes in Texas — deaths, injuries, and economic losses — and the top contributing factors identified by TxDOT. It covers how driver attitudes, habits, and emotions affect every decision behind the wheel, and the physical principles of crashes including speed, traction, and force of impact.

Texas Traffic Laws and Procedures This lesson covers Texas right-of-way laws, passing and turning requirements, speed limits, railroad crossing procedures, traffic signs and signals, pavement markings, pedestrian protections, the Move Over and Slow Down Law, and financial responsibility requirements. It also covers the Community Safety Education Act (Senate Bill 30) traffic stop procedures and the Texas Driving with Disabilities Program in detail.

Challenging Environments and Defensive Driving Covers how to handle adverse weather, fog, darkness, construction work zones, urban and rural driving, freeway entry and exit, trip planning, anticipating hazards, sharing the road with motorcycles, bicycles, large trucks, oversize vehicles, and the dangers of wireless device use and street racing.

Driving Emergencies, Safety Systems, and Alcohol's Effects Covers collision traps, off-road recovery, mechanical emergencies, Texas seat belt laws, airbag systems, child passenger safety seat requirements, and the physiological and psychological effects of alcohol on driving ability.

Texas Alcohol Laws, Human Trafficking, and Applying What You Have Learned Covers Texas DWI law, implied consent, zero tolerance, open container law, human trafficking recognition and reporting, and how to apply reduced-risk driving principles.
