Texas Driving Safety Course (DSC) — Complete Guide

The Texas Driving Safety Course (DSC) is a state-approved online course regulated by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR). Completing it allows eligible drivers to have a qualifying traffic ticket dismissed and keep the violation off their driving record. The course can also be taken voluntarily for an auto insurance discount.

What the Course Is

The Texas Driving Safety Course covers the Texas traffic safety problem, factors affecting driver performance, traffic laws and procedures, challenging driving environments, defensive driving strategies, driving emergencies, occupant safety, alcohol and traffic safety, and human trafficking awareness. The course spans 5 lessons and takes a minimum of 6 hours to complete online.

Who Takes This Course

The course is for Texas drivers who have received an eligible moving traffic violation and want to have it dismissed, and for drivers who want to take it voluntarily for an insurance discount. For ticket dismissal, you must get court permission before enrolling and you must not have completed a driving safety course within the past 12 months.

Cost

The total cost is $29 — a $25 course fee plus a $4 state fee. Both fees are required by Texas law and are collected at enrollment. Payment is required before the course begins.

How to Enroll

Visit drivinglogic.com, select the Texas Driving Safety Course, and complete registration. If you are taking the course for ticket dismissal, you must have court permission before enrolling. Payment is required before course access is granted.

How the Course Works

The course is self-paced and fully online. You complete it through your web browser at any time, on any device. The course is divided into 5 lessons. At the end of each lesson, you answer 4 multiple-choice questions. You must answer at least 3 of 4 correctly to advance to the next lesson. There is no final exam — the lesson quizzes are the only assessments.

Your Certificate

Your DS-230 completion certificate is emailed to you automatically after you finish all 5 lessons and pass all lesson quizzes. You must then submit this certificate — along with a certified Type 3A driving record from Texas DPS — to your court by the court's deadline. Driving Logic does not submit documents to the court on your behalf.

Reporting to TDLR

Driving Logic reports your completion to TDLR. Your certificate will appear in the TDLR validation system within 5 days of issuance. Courts can verify your certificate at tdlr.texas.gov/DESSearch.
