Can You Take the New Jersey Defensive Driving Course (DDC) for a Ticket

The New Jersey Defensive Driving Course is a point reduction program, not a ticket dismissal program. Completing it does not dismiss your ticket, remove the conviction from your record, or replace paying your fine. If you received a ticket and want to reduce the points it added to your record, the course is the right tool — but it works after the conviction, not instead of it.

What the Course Does

If you are eligible, completing the course can reduce up to 2 points on your New Jersey driving record. This benefit is applied by the MVC after Driving Logic reports your completion. The course does not dismiss the underlying violation, remove the conviction, replace paying your fine, or substitute for a court appearance unless your court specifically authorizes it.

If a Court Directed You to Take the Course

Some courts recommend or require participation in a defensive driving program as part of a case resolution. If your court has directed you to take the course, confirm that an approved online course satisfies the requirement before enrolling. Note any deadline the court has given you. When you complete the course, download your certificate and submit it to the court according to their instructions. Driving Logic reports your completion to the MVC but does not communicate directly with courts.

Enrolling After a Ticket

You can enroll in the course at any time after receiving a ticket to pursue the standard MVC point reduction benefit. You do not need court permission to enroll for point reduction. If you have a specific court deadline, make sure you allow enough time to complete the course before that date.
