New Jersey Defensive Driving Course (DDC) – Complete Guide
The New Jersey Defensive Driving Course (DDC) is a fully online, state-approved driver improvement program. Completing it can reduce up to 2 points from your New Jersey driving record and may qualify you for an automobile insurance discount. This guide covers everything you need to know from enrollment through completion.
What the Course Is
The New Jersey Defensive Driving Course covers defensive driving principles, hazard recognition, New Jersey traffic laws, impairment risks, and collision prevention strategies across 6 lessons and 38 topics. The course takes a minimum of 6 hours to complete and is delivered entirely online — no classroom attendance required.
The course includes quizzes after each module and a final exam. You must score 80% or higher to pass the final exam. You have up to 3 attempts.
Who Takes This Course
You can take the course voluntarily at any time. Most drivers enroll to reduce points on their New Jersey driving record, pursue an insurance discount, or meet a court recommendation. You do not need a specific reason to enroll.
To qualify for the MVC point reduction benefit you must hold a valid New Jersey driver's license and must not have received point reduction from a defensive driving course within the past 5 years.
Cost
The New Jersey Defensive Driving Course costs $29.95. This covers full course access, all quizzes, the final exam, your completion certificate, and Driving Logic's submission of your completion record to the MVC. There are no additional fees. Driving Logic accepts credit card and Apple Pay at checkout.
How to Enroll
Visit drivinglogic.com, select New Jersey Courses, and complete checkout. Your account is created automatically and you can begin the course immediately. The course runs in any modern web browser — no app or software download required.
How the Course Works
The course is self-paced and available 24 hours a day. Your progress saves automatically so you do not need to finish in one sitting. Each module must be completed in sequence. You must pass the quiz at the end of each module before the next one unlocks.
After finishing all 6 modules and their quizzes, the final exam becomes available. You must score 80% or higher to pass. The final exam draws 40 questions randomly from a 120-question bank. If you do not pass on the first attempt, you can review the correct answers and retake it. You have up to 3 total attempts.
How Long the Course Takes
The course requires a minimum of 6 hours to complete. Timed sections ensure you cannot move through the material faster than the state-required instructional time. You do not have to finish in one sitting — you can pause and resume at any time.
Your Completion Certificate
Your certificate is emailed to you after you pass the final exam and meet all course requirements. You do not need to request it — delivery is automatic. Check your spam folder if it does not arrive. You can provide the certificate to your insurer or court if needed.
Reporting to the NJ MVC
Driving Logic submits your completion record to the New Jersey MVC within 10 business days of your completion date. You do not need to submit anything to the MVC yourself. Point reduction is applied by the MVC after they process the submission, which may take several weeks.
Point Reduction
Completing the course can reduce up to 2 points on your New Jersey driving record if you are eligible. The benefit is generally available once every 5 years. Completing the course does not remove violations or convictions — it reduces your point total only.
Insurance Discount
Your certificate may qualify you for an automobile insurance discount. Eligibility and savings depend on your insurance provider. Contact your insurer directly to confirm eligibility and how to submit your certificate. Driving Logic does not submit certificates to insurance companies.
Refunds
Driving Logic offers a full refund within 30 days of purchase if your certificate has not been issued. Let us know and we can help.
