Florida Driver Education Traffic Safety (DETS) Course — Complete Guide
The Florida Driver Education Traffic Safety (DETS) Course is a state-required 6-hour online driver education program for first-time drivers under 18. Completing it is a mandatory step before applying for a Florida learner's license. This guide covers everything you need to know from enrollment through completion.
What the Course Is
The Florida DETS Course covers Florida traffic laws, safe driving practices, hazard recognition, Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) rules, substance awareness, and emergency driving situations across 4 lessons and 39 topics. The course takes a minimum of 6 hours to complete and is delivered entirely online — no classroom attendance required.
The course includes unit quizzes after each lesson and a comprehensive final exam. You must score 80% or higher to pass the final exam. Retakes are unlimited.
Who Takes This Course
The DETS Course is required for all first-time drivers under 18 who are applying for a Florida learner's license. This requirement took effect August 1, 2025 under F.S. 322.1615. The course replaces the former TLSAE requirement for applicants under 18.
You must be at least 14½ years old to take the DETS Course and at least 15 to be eligible to apply for a learner's license.
Cost
The Florida Driver Education Traffic Safety Course costs $29.95. This covers full course access, all unit quizzes, the final exam, your completion certificate, and Driving Logic's submission of your completion record to FLHSMV through DICIS. There are no additional fees charged by Driving Logic. Driving Logic accepts credit card and Apple Pay at checkout.
How to Enroll
Visit drivinglogic.com, select the Florida DETS Course, and complete checkout. Your account is created automatically and you can begin the course immediately. The course runs in any modern web browser — no app or software download required.
How the Course Works
The course is self-paced and available 24 hours a day. Your progress saves automatically so you do not need to finish in one sitting. Each lesson must be completed in sequence. After each lesson, you will complete a unit quiz before the next lesson becomes available.
After finishing all 4 lessons and their quizzes, the final exam becomes available. You must score 80% or higher to pass. The final exam draws 40 questions randomly from a 500-question bank. Retakes are unlimited and each attempt uses a new set of randomly selected questions.
How Long the Course Takes
The course requires a minimum of 6 hours to complete. Timed sections ensure you cannot move through the material faster than the state-required instructional time. You have 120 days from enrollment to complete the course.
Your Completion Certificate
Your certificate is emailed to you after you pass the final exam and meet all course requirements. You do not need to request it — delivery is automatic. Check your spam folder if it does not arrive. The certificate is in English. The certificate confirms your completion and can be kept for your records.
Reporting to FLHSMV
Driving Logic submits your completion record to FLHSMV through the DICIS system within 1 business day of your completion. You do not need to submit anything to FLHSMV yourself. Once submitted, your completion is visible to FLHSMV examiners when you visit a service center to apply for your learner's license.
After Completing the Course
Once you complete the DETS Course, you can take the Class E Knowledge Exam — the written permit test. After passing the knowledge exam, you can visit an FLHSMV service center to apply for your Florida learner's license. Additional GDL requirements — including 50 hours of supervised driving practice, 10 of which must be at night — apply before you can apply for a full license.
