Is the Florida Driver Education Traffic Safety (DETS) Course Required for a Learner's License
Yes. The Florida Driver Education Traffic Safety (DETS) Course is required for all first-time drivers under 18 who are applying for a Florida learner's license. This requirement took effect August 1, 2025 under F.S. 322.1615.
What the Requirement Means
Before you can apply for a Florida learner's license, you must complete a FLHSMV-approved DETS Course. Driving Logic's course is a state-approved provider. After you complete the course, Driving Logic reports your completion to FLHSMV through DICIS within 1 business day. FLHSMV examiners can then verify your completion electronically when you apply for your license.
The DETS Course Is the First Step
Completing the DETS Course is the mandatory first step in the learner's license process for drivers under 18. After completing the course, you still need to:
Pass the Class E Knowledge Exam (the written Florida permit test)
Visit an FLHSMV service center with required identification documents
Pass a vision and hearing test
Pay the applicable license fee
What the DETS Course Does Not Do
Completing the DETS Course alone does not give you a learner's license. It satisfies the driver education prerequisite. You must complete all other steps in the GDL process to receive your license.
