What Is the Florida Driver Education Traffic Safety (DETS) Course
The Florida Driver Education Traffic Safety (DETS) Course is a state-required 6-hour online driver education program. It is required for all first-time drivers under 18 before they can apply for a Florida learner's license. The course is approved by the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) and meets the requirements of F.S. 322.1615.
How the Course Works
The course is completed entirely online at your own pace. To finish it you must complete all 4 instructional lessons, pass a unit quiz after each lesson, pass a final exam with a score of 80% or higher, complete identity validation requirements throughout the course, and complete the required 6 hours of instructional time.
After you finish, your completion certificate is emailed to you and Driving Logic submits your completion record to FLHSMV through DICIS within 1 business day.
What the Course Is For
The Florida DETS Course is the mandatory first step in the learner's permit process for drivers under 18. It replaced the former TLSAE (Traffic Law and Substance Abuse Education) requirement for that age group effective August 1, 2025. Completing it does not grant a license — it satisfies the driver education prerequisite required before applying for a Florida learner's license.
What the Course Covers
The course covers Florida traffic laws, traffic signs and signals, safe driving techniques, hazard recognition, Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) rules, substance awareness, distracted driving, emergency driving situations, and law enforcement interactions. Content meets the FDOE Traffic Safety-Classroom 1900300 course requirements.
