Arizona Defensive Driving Course (DDC) — Complete Guide
The Arizona Defensive Driving Course (DDC) is a state-approved online court diversion program. Completing it dismisses an eligible traffic citation from Arizona court records and prevents the violation from appearing on your Motor Vehicle Division (MVD) driving record. The course is certified by the Arizona Supreme Court and administered under ACJA § 7-205 and A.R.S. §§ 28-3391 through 28-3399.
What the Course Is
The Arizona Defensive Driving Course covers driver attitude and responsibility, Arizona traffic laws, road sharing, impaired and distracted driving, vehicle safety systems, driver condition and human factors, defensive driving techniques, and Arizona environmental and situational hazards. The course spans 8 lessons and 28 topics and takes a minimum of 4 hours — and no more than 4.5 hours — to complete online.
Who Takes This Course
The course is for drivers who have received an eligible moving traffic citation from an Arizona court and want to divert it rather than pay the fine and accept points on their record. It is also available for court-ordered attendance and voluntary insurance discount enrollment. You must be eligible under A.R.S. § 28-3392 — most importantly, you must not have completed a defensive driving course within the past 12 months based on citation date.
Cost
Course fees in Arizona include a fixed state fee, a fixed state surcharge, a court diversion fee that varies by court, and Driving Logic's school fee. The total cost depends on which court issued your citation. Do not pay your traffic fine directly to the court — doing so makes you ineligible for diversion. Driving Logic collects all fees on your behalf as required by Arizona law.
How to Enroll
Visit drivinglogic.com, select the Arizona Defensive Driving Course, and complete registration. You will need a copy of your traffic citation and a valid government-issued photo ID. Driving Logic verifies your eligibility before you begin the course. Payment is required before the course starts.
How the Course Works
The course is self-paced and fully online. You complete it through your web browser at any time. The course is divided into 8 lessons with interactive segments. You must respond to participation prompts throughout each lesson and answer substantive questions at the end of each segment correctly before advancing. Identity validation questions also appear throughout the course to confirm you are the registered student.
There is no final exam. Arizona does not require a graded final test — completion is determined by active participation and correct responses to segment questions throughout the course.
The 7-Day Rule
You must complete the course at least 7 days before your court appearance date. This is an Arizona Supreme Court requirement that applies to all certified providers. Do not wait until the last minute. If your court date is too close, contact your court to request an extension before enrolling.
Your Certificate
Your completion certificate is emailed to you automatically after you finish the course. The certificate is issued in English and includes your name, completion date, court of jurisdiction, and citation information. There is no charge for the certificate.
Reporting to the Court
Driving Logic submits your completion record to the Arizona statewide defensive driving database within 1 business day of your course completion. This notifies your court that you have completed the course. Courts do not send confirmation when they process dismissals — you can call your court directly approximately 2 weeks after completing the course if you want to confirm your citation was dismissed.
