How Long Is the Arizona Defensive Driving Course (DDC)

The Arizona Defensive Driving Course takes a minimum of 4 hours (240 minutes) and no more than 4.5 hours (270 minutes) to complete. Both limits are set by Arizona Supreme Court rule. You cannot finish the course faster than 4 hours and cannot exceed 4.5 hours of active course time.

Why There Is Both a Minimum and a Maximum

The 4-hour minimum ensures every student receives the full required instructional time. The 4.5-hour maximum is also set by state rule — the course is structured so that active participation and segment questions keep you within this range automatically. You do not need to manage the timing yourself.

You Can Split the Course Across Multiple Sessions

You do not need to complete all 4 hours at once. Your progress saves automatically each time you leave the course. You can return at any time and pick up where you left off — as long as you finish at least 7 days before your court appearance date.

The 7-Day Rule

You must complete the course at least 7 calendar days before your court appearance date. Plan your sessions so you finish with enough time to spare. If your court date is too close to complete the course in time, contact your court to request an extension before enrolling.
