What Happens If I Fail the DPS Permit Exam

If the teen does not pass the DPS permit exam on the first attempt, a 24-hour cooldown applies before they can retake it. Their score and the areas where they missed questions are shown immediately after the exam — use that time to review the relevant Module 1 content before retaking.

What You See After a Failed Attempt

Immediately after submitting:

  • Score out of 30

  • Whether the exam was passed or not

  • A summary of question areas where answers were incorrect

How to Prepare for a Retake

Go back and review the Module 1 lessons that cover the topics where questions were missed. Road signs, right-of-way rules, and traffic laws are the most heavily tested areas. The Texas Driver Handbook is available free on the Texas DPS website and is the source document for all exam content.

Retaking the Exam

After 24 hours, the exam unlocks again. The retake draws from the same DPS question set — specific questions and order may vary between attempts. There is no additional fee to retake.

Progress Is Not Affected

Failing the exam does not affect Module 1 completion status or any accumulated instructional time. The teen does not need to redo Module 1 content — they simply review and retake the exam when ready.
