What Is the DPS Permit Exam in Module 1

The DPS permit exam in Module 1 is the official Texas Department of Public Safety Highway Sign and Traffic Law Examination — the same written knowledge test teens would otherwise take at a DPS driver license office. It is integrated directly into the course and taken online at the end of Module 1.

What the Exam Covers

The exam tests knowledge of Texas traffic laws and road signs — the same content covered throughout Module 1:

  • Texas road signs — regulatory, warning, and guide signs

  • Traffic signals and pavement markings

  • Right-of-way rules and intersection procedures

  • Speed limits, passing, and turning laws

  • Alcohol and zero-tolerance laws for drivers under 21

  • Sharing the road safely

Exam Structure

  • 30 multiple-choice questions

  • Passing score: 70% — at least 21 of 30 correct

  • Not timed — the teen can take as long as needed

  • 24-hour cooldown if not passed on the first attempt

Why It Matters

Passing the exam generates the DE-964 6-Hour Permit Qualification Certificate immediately. When the teen takes this certificate to the DPS, they skip the written knowledge test at the counter. The DPS only needs to run a vision test and process the application.

Where It Appears

The exam unlocks at the very end of Module 1, after all 6 hours of content are complete. It cannot be accessed earlier.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this the same exam the teen would take at the DPS office? Yes. It is the official Texas DPS written knowledge examination, administered online through the course. Passing it means the teen has already completed the written test requirement.

Can the teen use their notes during the exam? The exam is self-administered online at home without a proctor. There are no restrictions on reference materials, but the exam is designed to test understanding, not recall of obscure details. Completing Module 1 thoroughly is the best preparation.

Can a 14-year-old take the exam? Yes. A 14-year-old can complete Module 1 and pass the exam, but cannot apply for a Learner's Permit at the DPS until they turn 15.

What happens if the teen does not pass? There is a 24-hour cooldown before the exam can be retaken. See the permit exam failure article for details.

Does the exam score appear on the DE-964 certificate? No. The certificate confirms the exam was passed but does not show the specific score.
