This guide covers everything you need to know about the Virginia Driver Improvement Course offered by Driving Logic at drivinglogic.com.
What Is the Course?
The Virginia Driver Improvement Course is an 8-hour online course licensed by the Virginia DMV under Va. Code § 46.2-490.3. It covers 25 lessons of Virginia traffic law and defensive driving, followed by a 50-question final exam.
Virginia drivers take this course for one of four reasons:
Reason | Use Case |
Court-ordered | A judge ordered you to complete a driver improvement clinic |
DMV-required | The DMV notified you due to excess demerit points |
Voluntary | You want to earn 5 safe driving points |
Insurance | You want to qualify for an auto insurance discount |
You select your reason at registration. It determines what you receive after completing the course.
Who Is Eligible?
Any Virginia driver can take the course. Key restrictions:
CDL holders required to complete a clinic for a CDL-related offense must use a commercial driver improvement clinic — this course does not satisfy that requirement
Safe driving points and insurance discount cannot both be received from one completion — choose one at registration
Court-ordered students must confirm with their court that it accepts an online course before enrolling — not all Virginia courts do
How the Course Works
25 lessons covering all Virginia DMV-required topics
Lesson quizzes after each lesson
50-question final exam; 80% passing score (40 of 50 correct)
Stop and resume at any time — progress saves automatically
Works on any device: desktop, laptop, tablet, or smartphone
You have 120 days from enrollment to complete the course Deadline note for mandated students: The 90-day DMV clock runs from your DMV order date, not your enrollment date. If you received your DMV notice several weeks before enrolling, you have fewer than 90 days remaining when you start. Court-ordered students should check their court paperwork for their specific deadline.
