Virginia drivers take the Driver Improvement Course for one of four reasons. You select your reason when you register, and it determines what benefits you receive and what steps you take after completing the course.
1. Court-Ordered
A Virginia court or judge ordered you to complete a driver improvement clinic.
You must complete the course by the deadline set by your court
Bring your completion certificate to your court after finishing — Driving Logic does not submit it to the court for you
The court decides whether you receive safe driving points
You are not eligible for an insurance discount if court-ordered
Before enrolling: Confirm with your court that it accepts an online course
2. DMV-Required
The Virginia DMV sent you a written notice requiring you to complete the course.
You must complete the course within 90 days of the DMV order date
Driving Logic reports your completion to the DMV automatically within 24 business hours
You receive 5 safe driving points added to your driving record
You are not eligible for an insurance discount under this reason
If you do not complete the course within 90 days, the DMV will suspend your driving privilege until you do.
3. Voluntary — Safe Driving Points
You are choosing to take the course on your own to earn safe driving points.
You earn 5 safe driving points upon successful completion
You can do this once every 24 months
Driving Logic reports your completion to the DMV automatically
You are not eligible for an insurance discount under this reason
No court order or DMV notice required
4. Insurance Discount
You are taking the course to qualify for an auto insurance premium discount.
Your insurance company must offer this benefit — confirm eligibility before enrolling
Driving Logic reports your completion to the DMV automatically
Submit your completion certificate to your insurance company directly
You will not receive safe driving points under this reason
Discounts vary by insurer; contact your agent for specifics
Important Rules
Two pairs of reasons are mutually exclusive:
You cannot earn safe driving points and an insurance discount from the same course completion
You cannot satisfy a court order and receive an insurance discount from the same completion
If you choose the wrong reason at registration, your benefits may not apply. Choose carefully before you enroll.
