How Many Points Does the New Jersey Defensive Driving Course (DDC) Remove

If you are eligible, completing the New Jersey Defensive Driving Course can reduce up to 2 points from your New Jersey driving record. This benefit is applied by the MVC after Driving Logic reports your completion.

How the Point Reduction Works

After you complete the course, Driving Logic submits your completion record to the New Jersey MVC. The MVC then applies the point reduction to your driving record. This typically takes several weeks after submission.

The course does not remove violations or convictions. It reduces your point total only. If you currently have fewer than 2 points, the reduction will bring your total to zero — it does not go below zero.

Frequency Limit

The point reduction benefit is generally available once every 5 years. If less than 5 years have passed since your last approved defensive driving course completion, additional point reduction will not be applied.

Effect on Insurance

Point reduction may improve your driving record standing, which could affect your insurance rates over time. However, insurance discounts from completing the course are separate from point reduction and are determined by your insurer. Contact your insurance company to confirm.
