Is There a Final Exam in the Texas Driving Safety Course (DSC)

No. The Texas Driving Safety Course does not have a final exam. Assessment is built into the lesson quizzes — there are 4 questions at the end of each of the 5 lessons. Once you pass all 5 lesson quizzes, the course is complete and your certificate is issued automatically.

How Assessment Works

Instead of a single final exam at the end of the course, your understanding is assessed progressively as you complete each lesson. Each 4-question quiz covers the material from that lesson only. You must answer at least 3 of 4 correctly to advance. Retakes are unlimited.

Why There Is No Final Exam

Texas does not require a standalone final exam for the Driving Safety Course. TDLR permits providers to use chapter-based assessments — one per lesson — in place of a comprehensive final exam. This approach is standard across the major TDLR-approved online providers and is the preferred format for online delivery.

What Happens After the Last Quiz

Once you pass the quiz for Lesson 5, the course is complete. Your DS-230 completion certificate is generated and emailed to you automatically. No additional steps are required to finish the course.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will the court require a final exam? No. Texas courts accept the DS-230 certificate issued upon completion of the TDLR-approved course. They do not review or require documentation of specific exam formats.

Is this the same format used by other Texas defensive driving providers? Yes. End-of-lesson quizzes with no separate final exam is the industry-standard format for TDLR-approved online driving safety courses in Texas.

What if I fail a lesson quiz multiple times? You can retake each quiz as many times as needed. Review the lesson content and try again. There is no penalty for multiple attempts and no limit on retakes.

Are the lesson quizzes harder than a final exam would be? No. Each quiz covers only the content from that lesson. Most students find the 4-question format straightforward.

Will I know immediately if I passed the quiz? Yes. Your result is shown immediately after you submit your quiz answers. If you pass, the next lesson unlocks. If you do not pass, you can retake right away.
