What Happens If I Do Not Finish the Texas Parent Taught Driver Education Course
Nothing is lost. Progress saves automatically and the teen can return at any time to continue. No certificate is issued until the relevant milestone is reached — no partial certificates are generated for incomplete work.
Stopping After Module 1
If the teen completes Module 1 and passes the DPS exam but does not continue to Modules 2–12, the DE-964 Permit Qualification Certificate is still issued. The teen can use it to get a Learner's Permit and then return to finish the remaining 18 hours later. There is no deadline.
Stopping Mid-Course
If the teen stops partway through the course — before completing all 12 modules — their progress is saved. They can log back in at any time and continue from where they left off. The Full Completion Certificate is not issued until all 24 hours and all 12 quizzes are complete.
No Expiration on Enrollment
The course enrollment does not expire. The teen can take weeks, months, or longer to finish. The only timing constraint is if the Learner's Permit approaches its 2-year expiration before all requirements are met — in that case, the permit would need to be renewed at the DPS.

My teen's Learner's Permit is about to expire and they have not finished the course — what do we do? The course does not expire — only the permit does. Renew the permit at the DPS if needed. The DE-964 certificates already issued remain valid. Contact your local DPS office for permit renewal guidance.
