Before visiting the DPS for the Provisional License, confirm that all requirements are complete: 6-month permit holding period, age 16+, all 44 BTW hours, full 24-hour classroom course, and a valid ITTD certificate. Missing any document or requirement means the DPS will not process the application.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the teen take a written test at the Provisional License stage? No. The DE-964 Completion Certificate confirms the written exam was already passed in Module 1. Only a vision test and the road test are required at this DPS visit.

What if the ITTD certificate expires before the appointment? Complete ITTD again — it is free and takes about 2 hours. Reschedule the DPS appointment to fall within the new 90-day window.

Does the parent need to be present? Yes. A parent or legal guardian must accompany the teen and present their own valid ID.

What if the driving log is incomplete? The DPS will not process the Provisional License application without the completed and signed 30-hour practice driving log. Ensure all 30 hours (including 10 at night) are logged and the parent has signed the log.

Can the road test be taken at a third-party provider instead of the DPS? Yes. Texas allows approved third-party testing providers to administer the road test. Third-party providers sometimes have shorter wait times. Search the TDLR website for approved providers near you.
