What Happens After I Finish the Texas Adult Driver Education Course (ADE)

After finishing the Texas ADE and receiving your ADEE-1317 certificate, complete the free ITAD program, then visit a Texas DPS driver license office to get your license.

Updated today

After passing the DPS exam and receiving your ADEE-1317 certificate, there are two more steps before you can get your Texas driver's license: completing the free ITAD program and visiting a DPS driver license office.

Step 1 — Receive Your ADEE-1317 Certificate

Your certificate is emailed to you immediately after you pass the DPS exam. Note the ADE control number printed on it — you will need it to register for ITAD. Driving Logic reports your completion to TDLR typically within 1 business day. You do not need to wait for that before moving to the next steps.

Step 2 — Complete the ITAD Program

The Impact Texas Adult Drivers (ITAD) program is a free 1-hour video course from the Texas Department of Public Safety. It is required before you can take your driving test.

  • Go to impacttexasdrivers.dps.texas.gov

  • Select ITAD (adult) — not ITTD (teen)

  • Register using your ADE control number from the certificate

  • Watch the 3-part video (about 1 hour total)

  • Your ITAD certificate is emailed to you after completion

  • ITAD certificate is valid for 90 days — schedule your DPS visit within this window

Step 3 — Schedule Your DPS Appointment

Schedule an appointment at your local Texas DPS driver license office at txdpsscheduler.com. Appointments are required — walk-ins are not accepted. Schedule your appointment to fall within the 90-day ITAD validity window.

Step 4 — Visit the DPS Driver License Office

Bring the following to your appointment:

  • ADEE-1317 certificate (from Driving Logic) — printed or digital

  • ITAD certificate (from DPS — valid for 90 days)

  • Proof of U.S. citizenship or lawful presence

  • Proof of identity

  • Two proofs of Texas residency

  • Social Security number documentation

  • Proof of insurance for your test vehicle

  • Insured, registered vehicle for the road test

  • $33 DPS application fee

At the DPS you will complete a vision test, have your photo and thumbprints taken, and take the in-car road test. If you pass, you will receive a temporary license receipt valid for 45 days until your permanent license arrives by mail.

Timing Note — Act Within 2 Years of Completing the Course

The ADEE-1317 certificate document has no expiration date. However, the written exam score recorded on it — which waives the in-person written test at the DPS — is valid for 2 years from the date you passed the exam. If you wait more than 2 years before visiting the DPS, you will need to take the written knowledge test in person at the DPS office. You would not need to redo the Driving Logic course. For most students this is not a concern — the 90-day ITAD window drives timing for the vast majority of completers.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to get my license after finishing the course? After completing ITAD (about 1 hour), you can schedule your DPS appointment. Wait times vary by location — urban offices tend to book further out.

Do I need to complete ITAD before scheduling my DPS appointment? You need your ITAD certificate to bring to the DPS, so ITAD must be done before your appointment. You can schedule the appointment first and complete ITAD in the meantime, as long as your ITAD certificate is still valid on your appointment date.

What if I do not have a car for the road test? You must bring an insured, registered vehicle. Some third-party testing providers at dps.texas.gov may have vehicles available.

Does Driving Logic contact the DPS for me? No. Driving Logic reports your completion to TDLR. You are responsible for completing ITAD and scheduling and attending your DPS appointment.

What if I fail the road test? Road test failures are handled by the DPS. You will need to reschedule to retake the road test. Your ADEE-1317 and ITAD certificates remain valid as long as they have not expired.
