Does the Texas Adult Driver Education (ADEE-1317) Certificate Expire

The ADEE-1317 certificate itself has no expiration date. However, the written exam score recorded on it is valid for 2 years, and the ITAD certificate you complete afterward is valid for only 90 days.

Updated today

The ADEE-1317 certificate itself has no expiration date. However, two important validity windows apply after completing the course — and understanding both matters depending on how quickly you pursue your license.

The ADEE-1317 Certificate — No Expiration

The ADEE-1317 certificate document does not expire. Once issued, it remains valid indefinitely as a document. You do not need to retake the Driving Logic course because time has passed.

The Written Exam Score — 2 Years

The Texas DPS written knowledge exam score recorded on your ADEE-1317 certificate is valid for 2 years from the date you passed the exam. This is the exam result that waives the written test at the DPS office.

If more than 2 years pass before you visit the DPS to apply for your license:

  • Your ADEE-1317 certificate is still valid as a document

  • You do not need to retake the Driving Logic course

  • However, the written exam score on the certificate has expired

  • The DPS will not honor the written test waiver

  • You will need to take the written knowledge test in person at the DPS office on the day of your appointment

The ITAD Certificate — 90 Days

The ITAD certificate you complete after finishing this course is valid for 90 days from completion. Since ITAD is required before your driving test, your DPS appointment must fall within that 90-day window. If it expires, complete ITAD again for free.

How These Windows Work Together in Practice

For most students, only the ITAD 90-day window matters — the vast majority visit the DPS within weeks of completing the course. The 2-year exam score window is a long runway that affects only students who complete the course but then delay their DPS visit for an extended period.

If your ITAD certificate expires, completing ITAD again (free) gives you a new 90-day window. If your 2-year exam window also expires, you would then need to take the written test at the DPS in person — but you would not need to redo the Driving Logic course.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if my ITAD certificate expires before my DPS appointment? Complete the ITAD program again at impacttexasdrivers.dps.texas.gov — it is free and takes about 1 hour. Use the same ADE control number from your original ADEE-1317 certificate. Then reschedule your DPS appointment within the new 90-day window.

What if 2 years pass before I go to the DPS? Your ADEE-1317 certificate is still valid as a document, but the written exam score on it has expired. You do not need to redo the Driving Logic course. At your DPS appointment, you will need to take the written knowledge test in person. Contact a DPS driver license office for guidance on your specific situation.

Should I complete ITAD immediately after finishing the Driving Logic course? Only if you plan to schedule your DPS appointment within the next 90 days. If your DPS visit is further out, wait to complete ITAD until you are closer to your appointment date.

Can I complete ITAD multiple times if needed? Yes. ITAD is free and can be completed again using the same ADE control number from your ADEE-1317 certificate whenever your certificate expires.

What if I lost my ADEE-1317 certificate and need the ADE control number? Contact Driving Logic support and we can resend your certificate at no charge.
