The 24-Hour Wait Is a DPS Requirement

The 24-hour cooldown between DPS exam attempts is set by the Texas Department of Public Safety — not by Driving Logic. The same rule applies regardless of which TDLR-approved provider is used. Driving Logic cannot waive or shorten this wait.

Do Failed Attempts Affect the Certificate?

No. The number of DPS exam attempts is not recorded on the DE-964 Permit Qualification Certificate.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does failing the exam reset Module 1? No. All Module 1 content and the module quiz remain completed. Only the DPS exam needs to be retried.

How soon after 24 hours can the exam be retaken? Once the 24-hour wait has passed, the exam is available again in the course dashboard. Log in and navigate to the exam to retake it.

Is there anything the teen can do while waiting? Yes. Modules 2–12 are not locked by the DPS exam result. The teen can continue working on later modules while waiting for the 24-hour window to pass. However, the DE-964 Permit Certificate will not be issued until the DPS exam is passed — regardless of how much of the rest of the course is completed.

Can the teen apply for the Learner's Permit without passing the DPS exam? No. The Permit Certificate is only issued after Module 1 is complete and the DPS exam is passed. Without the certificate, the written test must be taken at the DPS office in person instead.

What if the teen fails many times — is there a limit? No. There is no limit on the number of DPS exam retake attempts. Each failed attempt simply requires another 24-hour wait before the next try.
