What Is Module 1 and Why Is It Special
Module 1 is the first module of the 24-hour Texas Parent Taught Driver Education course. It covers Texas traffic laws and requires a minimum of 6 hours of active instructional time. It is the only module that must be completed before the teen can apply for the Learner's Permit — and it is the only module that includes the official Texas DPS written knowledge exam.
What Module 1 Covers
Module 1 — Traffic Laws — covers the foundational rules of driving in Texas:
Texas driver licensing and the Graduated Driver License (GDL) system
Right-of-way rules
Traffic control devices — signs, signals, and pavement markings
Speed limits and safe following distance
Passing, turning, and lane changes
Alcohol and zero-tolerance laws for minors
Sharing the road with pedestrians, cyclists, and large vehicles
The DPS Written Knowledge Exam
At the end of Module 1, after the module quiz is passed, the teen takes the official 30-question Texas DPS Highway Sign and Traffic Law Examination. This is the same written exam all Texas license applicants take — Driving Logic administers it but does not write the questions.
Passing at 70% (21 of 30 correct) triggers the automatic issuance of the DE-964 Permit Qualification Certificate and waives the written test when the teen visits the DPS for the Learner's Permit.
What Happens After Module 1
Once Module 1 is complete and the DPS exam is passed:
The DE-964 Permit Qualification Certificate is available immediately for download
The teen can visit DPS to apply for the Learner's Permit (age 15 required)
Modules 2–12 unlock and the teen can continue the remaining 18 hours at any pace
Behind-the-wheel training can begin once the Learner's Permit is issued

Frequently Asked Questions
Can the teen start behind-the-wheel training after Module 1? Not immediately. The teen first needs to visit DPS and receive the actual Learner's Permit. Behind-the-wheel training can begin once the permit is in hand — not just after Module 1 is complete.
Does Module 1 have to be completed in one sitting? No. The 6-hour minimum for Module 1 can be spread across multiple sessions. Progress saves automatically.
What if the DPS exam is failed? The exam can be retaken after a 24-hour wait. There is no limit on attempts and no additional cost. The module quiz and all Module 1 content remain completed — only the exam needs to be retried.
If the teen is 14, can they apply for the permit after completing Module 1? No. The minimum age to apply for the Learner's Permit is 15. A 14-year-old can complete Module 1 and pass the DPS exam, but must wait until their 15th birthday to visit the DPS.
