What Is the Texas Parent Taught Driver Education Course
The Texas Parent Taught Driver Education (PTDE) course is a state-approved online course that allows a parent, grandparent, foster parent, or other eligible adult to serve as the driving instructor for their teen. Instead of attending a commercial driving school, the teen completes 24 hours of classroom instruction online at home, and the parent or designated adult provides the required behind-the-wheel training.
Driving Logic's PTDE course is approved by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) under provider license C3595. It is available entirely online in English and can be completed on any device with a web browser.
What the Course Includes
The course covers everything Texas requires for teen driver education — traffic laws, defensive driving, distractions, alcohol and drugs, adverse conditions, and more — across 12 sequential modules. At the end of Module 1, the teen takes the official Texas DPS written knowledge exam online. Passing it means they can skip the written test at the DPS when applying for their Learner's Permit.
Two DE-964 certificates are issued at different stages: one after completing Module 1 and passing the DPS exam (used to get the Learner's Permit), and one after completing all 24 hours (used to get the Provisional License). A single $10 certificate fee covers both.
Who This Course Is For
This course is for Texas teens between the ages of 14 and 17 whose parent or another eligible adult will serve as their driving instructor. If the teen is 18 or older and applying for their first Texas license, they need the Adult Driver Education course instead.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is this the same as a regular driving school? No. In a commercial driving school, a licensed driving instructor provides the classroom and behind-the-wheel training. In the PTDE program, a parent or eligible adult serves as the instructor. The teen completes the same state-required curriculum online, but the family handles the driving practice.
Does this course satisfy the Texas driver education requirement? Yes. Completing the Driving Logic PTDE course and the required 44 hours of behind-the-wheel training satisfies the full Texas driver education requirement for teens ages 14–17.
Is this different from the Texas Teen (AMI) Driver Education course? Yes. The AMI (Alternative Method of Instruction) course is instructor-led and does not require a parent to serve as the designated instructor. The PTDE course specifically requires a parent or eligible adult to take on the instructor role for the behind-the-wheel portion.
Can an adult 18 or older take this course? No. This course is for teens ages 14–17. Adults ages 18 and older who need their first Texas license should take the Texas Adult Driver Education course.
