Frequently Asked Questions

Can the Permit Certificate be used to get the Provisional License? No. The Provisional License requires the Full Completion Certificate, which is only issued after all 24 hours and all 12 quizzes are complete.

What if the teen gets the Permit Certificate but never finishes the rest of the course? The teen has a valid Learner's Permit and the 6-month holding clock runs, but the Provisional License cannot be applied for without the Full Completion Certificate. The remaining course modules must be finished.

Both certificates are the same DE-964 format — how are they different? Both are DE-964 certificates, but they have different labels indicating their purpose. One reads "FOR LEARNER LICENSE ONLY" and one reads "FOR DRIVER LICENSE ONLY." DPS uses these labels to verify which stage of the licensing process the certificate applies to.

What if the name on one certificate is wrong? Let us know right away. Both certificates must match the teen's legal government-issued ID exactly. Do not take an incorrectly named certificate to the DPS.
