Frequently Asked Questions

Does the teen take a written test at this stage? No. The written knowledge test was already completed online through Module 1 of the Driving Logic course. Only a vision test and the road test (driving skills exam) are required at this DPS visit.

What if the ITTD certificate expires before the appointment? Complete ITTD again — it is free and takes about 2 hours. Reschedule the DPS appointment to fall within the new 90-day window.

Does the parent need to be present? Yes. A parent or legal guardian must accompany the teen and present their own valid ID. If a non-family designated adult served as the PTDE instructor, that adult must also be present.

Can the road test be taken at a third-party provider instead of the DPS? Yes. Texas allows approved third-party testing providers to administer the road test. Third-party providers sometimes have shorter wait times. Search the TDLR website or DPS website for approved providers near you.

What if the teen is scheduled at DPS but does not have one of the documents? The DPS will not process the application without all required documents. It is better to reschedule than to arrive incomplete — DPS appointment slots are in demand and arriving unprepared wastes the visit.
