Are There Quizzes or Tests in the Arizona Defensive Driving Course (DDC)
The Arizona Defensive Driving Course has no final exam and no traditional scored quizzes. The Arizona Supreme Court removed the graded final exam requirement in 2018. Assessment is built into the course through two mechanisms: segment questions that must be answered correctly to advance through the course, and identity validation questions that verify you are the registered student.
How Assessment Works in Arizona
Arizona takes a participation-based approach to course completion. Instead of a graded test at the end, you are assessed continuously throughout the course through active engagement. You must respond to participation prompts throughout each lesson and answer substantive questions at the end of each segment before the next section unlocks.
Segment Questions
At the end of each lesson segment, you must answer a set of substantive questions based on the content you just completed. You must answer them correctly to advance. There is no score — you either answer correctly and proceed, or you retry until you do. These are not optional and cannot be skipped.
Identity Validation Questions
Separate from the segment questions, identity validation questions appear at random intervals throughout the course. These verify that you — the registered student — are the one completing the course. They must be answered correctly within a time limit. Failing an identity validation question has serious consequences.
No Final Exam
There is no graded final exam. Once you complete all lessons, segment questions, identity validation requirements, and the full 4-hour instructional time, the course is complete and your certificate is issued.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a test at the end of the Arizona Defensive Driving Course? No. Arizona does not require a graded final exam. Completion is based on active participation and answering segment questions correctly throughout the course.
Can I fail the course by getting segment questions wrong? You cannot advance until you answer correctly, but you can retry segment questions. There is no limit on attempts and your progress is not permanently affected by wrong answers on segment questions.
What are the identity validation questions? These are questions that appear randomly throughout the course to confirm you are the registered student. They must be answered correctly within a time limit. Failing one has serious consequences — see the identity validation article for full details.
Does a wrong answer on a segment question fail the course? No. Wrong answers on segment questions just require you to retry. Only identity validation failures result in immediate course failure.
If there is no exam, how does the court know I learned the material? Arizona courts rely on the certified provider's completion record, which confirms you actively participated in and completed all course content within the required time window.
