Do I Need Court Approval to Enroll in the Missouri Driver Improvement Program (DIP)?

You must have approval before enrolling in the Missouri Driver Improvement Program. Depending on how your citation was issued, that approval comes from either a court or the Fine Collection Center (FCC). Voluntary enrollment is not available.

Court Approval

If your citation was issued by a municipal or county police officer, or if your case was routed to a local court, you need the judge to approve your DIP participation at your court hearing. Not all violations qualify — the court determines eligibility on a case-by-case basis.

FCC Approval

If your citation was issued by a Missouri State Highway Patrol officer and your county is on the FCC-approved list, you may be automatically approved for DIP when you pay your fine to the Fine Collection Center — no court appearance required.

If you are not sure which applies to you, contact the court or FCC for the county where your ticket was issued.

Why Is Approval Required?

The Missouri Driver Improvement Program is a state-regulated program authorized under Missouri Revised Statutes §302.302. The point prevention benefit only flows through the official approval process — either through your court or the FCC. Without approval, there is no mechanism for the DOR to stay the assessment of points.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I enroll and then get approval afterward? No. You must have approval before enrolling. Enrolling without approval will not result in the point prevention benefit.

What if my court has not told me about the Driver Improvement Program? Ask your attorney or the court clerk whether you are eligible for the Driver Improvement Program as part of your traffic case. Not all courts offer it for all violations.

What if I paid my fine to the FCC already — am I automatically enrolled? No. FCC approval means you are eligible to enroll in a DIP course — it does not enroll you automatically. You must then register and complete an approved course such as the one offered at drivinglogic.com.
